Choosing a video production company is a bit like choosing a builder: the work is expensive, the quality is hard to judge in advance, and the difference between a good and a bad decision only becomes obvious once you're committed. Here's how to choose well.
Start with the showreel — but watch critically
A reel shows what a company is proud of. Look beyond the slick editing: is the storytelling clear? Is the audio clean? Do the films look like they achieved a goal, or just look pretty? Crucially, is there work similar to what you need? A studio brilliant at music videos may not be the right fit for a corporate explainer.
Questions worth asking
- Who actually does the work — in-house team or subcontractors?
- What's included in the quote, and what's extra?
- How many rounds of revisions are included?
- Who owns the final footage and the raw files?
- What's the turnaround time, and what happens if it slips?
- Are they insured, and for drone work, CAA-qualified?
- Can they share references or case studies?
Beware the vague quote
A one-line price with no breakdown is a red flag. A professional partner will give you a written proposal that sets out scope, deliverables, timeline and cost. That clarity protects both sides and is itself a sign of how the project will be run.
Chemistry matters more than you think
You'll be collaborating closely, sometimes under time pressure. A team that listens, asks good questions about your goals, and pushes back sensibly is worth more than one that simply says yes to everything. The best films come out of genuine collaboration, not order-taking.
Local can be an advantage
A UK-based partner who can meet, scout locations and turn things around without travel overheads often delivers better value and easier communication than a distant studio — particularly for events and time-sensitive work.
Cheapest is rarely best value. Clearest is usually safest.
Brief well, ask the awkward questions early, and choose the partner who understands what your film needs to achieve — not just how to make it look nice.
